Carl A. Black

Carl A. Black, 82, of Sullivan, MO, passed away Sunday, August 6, 2017 at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

Carl was born on June 25, 1935 in Chicago, IL, the son of Raymond and Clara (Nelson) Black. Carl attended grade school at the Marengo School in Marengo, IL. The family then moved to the Bourbon area, where Carl attended the Mound School and Bourbon schools. At the age of 19 years, Carl married Goldie Brown on November 25, 1954 and they made their home in the Sullivan area. They were married for 61 years and had three children. Goldie preceded him in death in 2016.

Carl was a very devoted husband and father. He loved the country life; he and Goldie lived on their 20 acres on Highway H for over 55 years, where he enjoyed putting in a large garden and raising livestock. He spent many of his working years at Carden Machine Shop, where he retired as the plant manager in 2000. Carl was a man of great faith; he joined the Catholic church as a young man and was a lifelong member of Holy Martyrs of Japan Catholic church where he was well known as one of the Japan Picnic chicken fryers. Carl loved to fish and often would be at Meramec Springs State Park on the opening day of trout season. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Carl is survived by his children, Mike Black and wife Janet of Bowling Green, MO; Jackie Johnson and husband Terry of St. Charles, MO; and Barbara Black of St. Louis, MO; six grandchildren, Julie Black Steimel and husband Matt of Wright City, MO; Jennifer Tune Warren and husband Rob of St. Charles, MO; David Black and wife Elizabeth of Florissant, MO; Jeff Black and wife Katie of St. Louis, MO; Stefanie Tune Means and husband Brad of St. Charles, MO; and Brit Black of St. Louis, MO; nine great grandchildren; one sister, Donna Tayloe and husband Marvin of Sullivan; two nephews, Richard Tayloe and wife Judy of Fayette, MO; and Dale Tayloe and wife Sharon of Cedar Falls, IA; other relatives and many lifelong friends.

Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Goldie (Brown) Black and his parents, Raymond L. and Clara E. (Nelson) Black.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10 a.m., Friday, August 11, 2017 at Holy Martyrs of Japan Catholic Church with interment in Holy Martyrs Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 5-8 p.m., Thursday, August 10, 2017 at the Eaton Funeral Home in Sullivan, MO.

Memorials to the Parkinson Foundation or Masses to Holy Martyrs Catholic Church in memory of Carl are appreciated.
