Barbara Jane Erickson

Barbara Jane Erickson of Centreville, MD, and formerly of Annapolis, died peacefully at her home on July 4, 2017 due to complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease). She was 80.

Barbara was born on November 15, 1936 to Warren and Mary Kuhn on their dairy farm in Sullivan, MO where she was raised. After graduating from Sullivan High School, Barb attended Southwest Missouri State College for two years. Barb then moved to Maryland to teach school at Annapolis Elementary.

She married George A. Erickson, Jr., (Buddy) on June 30, 1957, and left teaching to raise her family. Barbara was active with both Eastport United Methodist Church in Annapolis, then after moving to Centreville in 1977, with Centreville United Methodist Church. Her other interests included quilting and other needle crafts.

In addition to her husband of 60 years, Barb is survived by her sister, Virginia Brady of Columbia, PA and her 7 children: Myreda Erickson-O’Brien of Annapolis, George W. Erickson of Centreville, William (Peggy) Erickson of Morehead City, NC, Mary (Paul) Woodruff of Montpelier, VA, Donald (Veneasa) Erickson of Bourbon, MO, Anna Erickson of Annapolis, and Evelina Erickson (Van Vogel) of Edgewater, MD. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Michael O’Brien of Denver, CO, Kelly O’Brien and Patrick O’Brien of Annapolis, and Kelly Erickson of New York City. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A memorial service was held at Centerville United Methodist Church on Monday July 17 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the ALS Association, Gift Processing Center, PO Box 37002, Boone IA 50037, or to Centerville UMC.
