Use Tax Will Be On April Ballot

The Sullivan City Council met in open session on Tuesday, December 19, where they approved placing a local use tax on the April 2018 municipal election ballot, received concerns from a Sullivan business owner regarding illegal activity near his business and approved two bids for city departments.

The council approved Ordinance 3783, sponsored by Alderman Mark Dalton, which will ask city voters to approve a two cent sales tax on items purchased out-of-state or the point of delivery. The sales tax is not necessarily a new tax but would allow the city to collect sales tax on items purchased typically online.

City sales tax revenue has showed a slight decline due to online purchases and the lack of sales tax generated by items not being purchased from local businesses. The tax would help keep local businesses on an even playing field for tax collection.

Alderman Mark Dalton, following a unanimous vote by the council to place the issue on the April ballot, stated that he was glad citizens will be able to get out and vote on the local use tax measure adding that voters need to keep in mind whether they want their city to have more or less funds in the community.

The Sullivan Independent News will have more on this proposed tax in the coming weeks prior to the April election.
