Sullivan Schools Offering Choice During First Semester

The Sullivan School District is offering a choice between traditional in-person learning and online learning during the first semester of the 2020-21 school year.

Superintendent Dr. Jana Thornsberry said July 30 that all families with students in kindergarten through 12th grade select a learning option.

Thornsberry said if students do online learning, it will require  participating for at least one quarter (K-8). High school students must participate for at least one semester.

Parents and/or guardians have until Thursday, Aug. 6 to decide.

Option 1 includes a traditional learning.

Students will attend classes in person and there will be increased sanitization, exposure screening protocols, homebound instruction for primary exposure on 14-day at-home quarantine and restrictions on visitors or volunteers.

Option 2 is online learning.

The application must be approved by the student’s building team and an agreement signed by the guardian and student.

Students choosing online learning are not eligible for extra-curricular activities.

Online Requirements

Students must complete six hours of coursework per day and be available from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

All assignments must be completed by the due date to receive credit/grades.

Students must be proactive in learning and requesting assistance from teachers.

Assessments like EOC and MAP must be taken in-person at the school, with a site to be determined.

All school board and building handbook policies must be followed, including code of conduct, technology use agreements and other requirements.

6th-12th Grade Online

The district will provide a Chromebook and they will receive all instruction off-site.

Students must join Google Classroom Meets and participate in all classes during regular class periods.

Students are expected to attend and participate in class at the designated time, just as if they were in person. Failure to join remotely results in an absence.

Students must maintain the same pacing, assignment and grading expectations as students who are attending in-person.

Course availability may be limited for some electives.

K-5th Online

For students in kindergarten through second grade, a device will not be provided. The district says it will work with families experiencing hardship.
