Sullivan Police See Increases In Multiple Areas For 2018

The Sullivan Police Department saw another record year in the number of incidents reported to the department in 2018. 

Police handled 14,341 incidents compared to 14,140 in 2017, with 10 increases in several areas and nine decreases in other types of incidents.

Sullivan Police Dispatch handled 2,209 911 calls compared to 2,109 in 2017.

In 2018, the police department recorded no homicides with only one reported in 2017; Sexual Offenses reported where 12 versus 11 in 2017. Of these cases, three sexual offenses led to any arrest; four robberies were reported in 2018 with one arrest in 2018 while none were reported in 2017; assaults saw an increase for 82 in 2017 to 99 in 2018 with 56 arrests made versus 38 in 2017; Burglaries increased to 106 in 2018 compared to 97 in 2017 with 19 arrests made over 15 in 2017; Stealing cases declined from 346 in 2017 to 267 in 2018 with 88 arrests in these cases made in 2018 versus 123 in 2017; motor vehicle theft was up with 35 in 2018 while 2017 saw 29 vehicle thefts that brought four arrests in 2018 and three in 2017; arson cases saw one reported incident in 2018 compared to none in 2017.

Drug crimes saw an increase in drug possession cases with 157 in 2018 compared to 146 in 2017, while distribution of a controlled substance arrests decreased from 31 in 2017 to 19 in 2018 and drug paraphernalia arrests decreased from 50 to 44 in 2018.

Domestic disturbance reports remained the same in 2018 with 226 as reported in 2017; with officers responded to motorist assists 107, escorts, 149 all seeing increases while alarm reports decreased from 225 in 2017 to 79 in 2018.

Driving while intoxicated arrest numbers decreased nearly half in 2018 with 17 in 2018 compared to 31 in 2017.

In traffic-related crimes, numbers decreased in nearly all areas with accidents on private property decreasing from 102 to 45, accidents on public property going from 105 to 86, traffic violations 357 compared to 572 in 2017 and other municipal violations from 255 down to 198.

Officers issued 696 written warnings for traffic violations, up from 554 in 2017.

Overall, the department made 437 felony arrests on warrants in 2018, an increase from 403 in 2017.

Activity in the Sullivan Animal Control Department saw the number of reports handled by the single officer go from 1,490 in 2017 to 1,551 in 2018 but animals recovered decreased from 478 in 2017 to 432 in 2018. Animals adopted increased to 161 over 155 in 2017 and the number of animals euthanized saw a dramatic decrease from 103 in 2017 to 50 in 2018.

Animals currently in the facility for the year decreased from 131 in 2017 to 94 in 2018 while animals being claimed from their owners increased from 81 to 85 in 2018.
