Sullivan Fire Alarms Increase In 2020

The Sullivan Fire Protection District saw an increase in their overall numbers in 2020, responding to 1,017 alarms.

The district responded to 1,000 in 2019 and 940 in 2018.

Sullivan Fire District Chief Eric Lewis presented the 2020 district statistics and year-end wrap up to the Sullivan Independent News this week.

Overall the district saw increases in the following areas: Overall Fires 130 versus 111 in 2019 and 126 in 2018; of these fires, structure fires increased to 42 from 33 in 2019; vehicle fires rose from 27 to 33; brush fires increased from 25-32 while rubbish fires declined from 8 in 2019 to 7 in 2020.

Rescue EMS calls increased in 2020 to 569 up from 524 in 2019 and 396 in 2019 in that increase; Medical Assists went from 338 to 569l vehicle accidents decreased from 159 in 2019 to 125 in 2020; Water Rescues increased from 2 in 2019 to 8 in 2020 and vehicle extrication increased from 1 to 5.

Hazardous Condition alarms decreased in a three-year trend with 61, in 2018, 53 in 2019 and 40 in 2020; Service Calls decreased from 59 to 36; Good Intent Alarms, 181 to 154 and False Alarms from 64 to 62.

The district's busiest days of the year in 2020 were: January 11, 11 alarms; December 10, 11 alarms; July 14, 9 alarms and August 10, 9 alarms.

The calls by month were the largest in January with 113 versus the lowest April with 54; Busiest Day of the Week was Saturdays with 168 alarms while the lightest day of the week was Thursday with 124 and the busiest time for alarms was 5 p.m., with 69 alarms while 3 a.m. was the lightest alarm time with 18.
