St. James Man Murdered Late Thursday, Suspect Arrested

The Phelps County Sheriff’s Department arrested a Rolla man late Thursday night in the murder of a St. James man.
Matthew A. Reeves, 32, is expected to be charged with second-degree murder.
Reeves is accused of shooting Michael J. Schmit, 35, St. James.
According to the Phelps County Sheriff’s Department, officers responded to the 11000 block of HIghway 72 around 11:25 p.m. on Thursday for a report of shots fired.
Officers found Schmitt lying in a driveway, “critically wounded” from an apparent gunshot.
He was taken to Phelps Health and pronounced dead from a gunshot wound.
Reeves was arrested without incident in the 10000 block of County Road 2060.
He is being held at the Phelps County Jail.
