Second Annual Farmers Market Kids Fest Hosted by Healthy Sullivan Coalition

The Healthy Sullivan Coalition recently hosted their second annual Kids Fest at the Sullivan Farmers Market. This year, several area businesses and organizations partnered with the Healthy Sullivan Coalition to offer a variety of activities and information for the kids including veggie tasting, a bike rodeo, performances by All That Jazz Dance Studio, wood working projects from Lowes, canned food collection by the Meramec Community Mission, A Zoo 4 U petting zoo, emergency vehicles from the Sullivan Fire, Police and Missouri Baptist EMS, decorate your own cupcakes from Our Story Coffee House & Café, crafts from Life House Youth Center, fitness games by Condition One CrossFit, a healthy shopping activity from the Sullivan Scenic Regional Library, health information and free jump ropes from Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital Therapy & Wellness, art activities with the Community Art Bus and information on the Sullivan School District Walking School Bus program. Each child who attended the Kids Fest received a Healthy Sullivan Coalition planter and tomato plant, and all of the kids who completed the bike rodeo received a new bicycle helmet and were entered into a drawing to win one of four free bicycles.

At the veggie tasting booth, kids had the opportunity to sample up to eight different vegetables, earning a ticket for each vegetable tasted, and could exchange those tickets for prizes. They also received prize tickets for participating in the fitness games and for bringing in canned food items to donate to the Meramec Community Mission. At the bike rodeo, a variety of safety topics were covered including the ABC Quick Check which teaches kids how to examine their bikes before every ride by checking air pressure in their tires, brake functionality, and their bicycle’s cranks, chain and cogs. They also discussed potential bike riding hazards they might encounter such as car doors, unrestrained dogs and cars backing out of driveways.

“This year the attendance more than doubled from last year with over 100 kids participating. We feel this event was a huge success, and we are extremely grateful to all of the business and organizations that came out to provide activities.” said Natalie Counts of the Healthy Sullivan Coalition. “We know it can be difficult to find fun and creative events close to home for kids, so we look forward to continue offering the Kids Fest at the Farmers Market for years to come.”

The Sullivan Farmers Market, Nutrition Education and Community Bike & Pedestrian Safety Education are a few of several projects sponsored by the Healthy Sullivan Coalition, a partnership of local organizations aimed at improving community health and safety.
