Second Annual Anytime Fitness Turkey Trot Grows In Second Year

Despite setbacks for everyone in 2020, due in part to COVID-19, Anytime Fitness, Sullivan, held their Second Annual Anytime Fitness Turkey Trot for Sullivan Special Olympics on Thursday, November 26, at 8 a.m.

Maggie West Heidbrink, owner, reported that this year saw a record number of sponsors and the number of runners participating grow a bit with 144 registered which was an increase of 15 over 2019.

“With the COVID-19 pandemic we were not sure how the event would go in Sullivan this year but things couldn’t have gone better and turnout was fantastic,” said Heidbrink. “We kept social distancing by letting the participants start at different interval times instead of having them all grouped and starting at the same time. We wanted everything to be done as safe as possible.”

West stated that the city did a great job getting the road closure signs out and with Wal-Mart being closed it made it much easier for the participants to avoid any traffic.

“We had just a couple of motorists go around the barriers but it was much improved over 2019 and we had very few complaints from citizens,” said Heidbrink. “The weather was perfect for the 5K and again overall things went very well.

Heidbrink stated that final numbers from the event have not been tabulated but Anytime Fitness expects to raise some $5,000 for Sullivan Special Olympics which would bring their two year total from the event to over $10,000.

“We are so honored to be able to hold this event and have it benefit our local chapter of Special Olympics, it means alot,” said Heidbrink. “We are already working on plans for our Third Annual Turkey Trot in 2021 and hope to continue this tradition for years to come.”
