Schatz Files Bill To Increase Missouri’s Gas Tax

A bill pre-filed by Dave Schatz (R-Sullivan), the Senate President Pro Tem, would increase Missouri’s fuel tax by 2 cents annually through 2026.

Schatz’s bill — SB 262 — would raise Missouri’s fuel tax from 17 cents to 27 cents by 2026.

Missouri has not seen an increase in the fuel tax since 1996 and it lags behind neighboring states.

It is the second-lowest in the country, with Alaska having the lowest.

The Missouri Department of Transportation said in 2019 that over the last 20 years, inflation and improved fuel economy has dropped the purchasing power from 17 cents to 6 cents.
