Power Outages Affect Sullivan City, Crawford Electric Customers

City of Sullivan Electric customers, along with Crawford Electric customers, were affected by a power outage Wednesday night, February 5, just after 10 p.m.

The North Side Substation, located off Bud Street/Peach Tree subdivison, went down Wednesday night, causing power losses in Sullivan in an area along and north of Interstate 44 while Crawford Electric customers, totaling some 712 in an area not served by the City of Sullivan, were also without power.

According to Sullivan City Administrator J.T. Hardy, the substation on the citiy’s north side is utilized by both Sullivan and Crawford Electric through an agreement with Sho-Me Power, which owns and maintains the facility.

Laura Hengstenberg, Crawford Electric, reported that Crawford Electric crews responded to the incident Wednesday night and began back feeding electric to outage customers while Sho-Me made repairs, indicating that power was fully restored to most customers by 3:30 a.m.

Hardy reported that Sullivan Electric crews also provided back feeding of electric to their customers, bringing them back in service with the exception of heavy industrial users who were not back on line until the early morning hours Thursday morning. 

The Sullivan Independent News received several calls regarding the matter including one caller who thought that the two electric suppliers in the area manufacture their own power.

Neither Crawford Electric nor the City of Sullivan manufacture their own power, rather the power is purchased from their own separate suppliers and agreements. The two do however share substations that supply power through Sho-Me Power, based out of Marshfield, Mo., with a satellite office in Cuba.
