Police Follow-Up With Number Of Calls To Hotels

For several months, the Sullivan Independent News has received requests from individuals concerned over the number of calls Sullivan Police are having to make to area hotels, some of which are very few while others seem to be very frequent.

The trend upward has saw calls to several hotels push the overall number more than 26 percent higher than at the same point in 2020.

In 2020, Sullivan Police were called from January 1 through September 30, 348 times with 84 reports generated.

In 2021, for the same time period, officers have responded to 478 calls and 94 reports have been taken.

“While the day to day numbers for these calls are not alarming when the numbers are put together for the year thus far through a formula we are going to work to get these numbers trending down,” said Police Chief Patrick Johnson. “The top three categories in which we get called to the local hotels are ambulance calls first, followed by disturbances and stealing incidents.”

Sullivan currently has five hotels within the city limits that make up the year to date numbers and monthly numbers, two of which have very few calls, while three others make up for the bulk of the calls for law enforcement.

Sullivan Comfort Inn, year to date has needed law enforcement only 14 times with only one formal police report needed, followed by Baymont with 45 calls to date and five formal reports.

Leading the calls for police locally is Sullivan Super 8, with 144 calls thus far in 2021 and 45 formal police reports which is followed by Motel 6, 140 calls and 14 formal reports and America’s Best with 135 to date and 29, formal reports.

In 2020, the numbers showed Comfort Inn with only 10 calls and three reports, Baymont 22 calls and one report, Super 8 with 142 calls and 36 reports, America’s Best 101 calls and 34 reports and Motel 6, 73 calls and 10 reports.

Johnson indicated that Sullivan Police will work to get these incidents down and would like to see hotel owners assist them in some of these categories.

In the October 6, 2021, edition of the Sullivan Independent News an alleged pistol whipping of a male subject behind Phillips 66 and near Super 8 Hotel, drew a large number of alleged allegations regarding activity in and around this area on the Sullivan Independent News Facebook page. Both businesses are located in adjacent parking lots on the North Service Rd.

That incident in which the male victim was uncooperative with law enforcement in catching the two males believed to have been involved in the incident remains under investigation.
