One Dead In Suspected Overdose

Sullivan Police are investigating a suspected drug overdose death that occurred Monday in the 1800 block of Elmont Road.

Police were dispatched to the area to find a man and woman unconscious.

The female victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The male victim was taken to the hospital and was in critical condition.

It was the fourth and fifth overdose investigations in the last week, police said. Three overdose deaths were averted with the use of Narcan prior to Monday.

At least two of the incidents involved two Sullivan males. Another incident occurred in the Bourbon area.

Sullivan Police Lt. Patrick Johnson reported Monday that the heroin is believed to be laced with fentanyl, a powerful opioid, and all three incidents are under investigation.

“Our officers are trained on the administration of nasal Narcan and carry it with them for incidents that occur like these,” said Johnson. “Sometimes it's very effective but in some cases EMS are needed to administer the IV dose of Narcan.”
