Microbrewery, Bids Discussed By Council Tuesday

The Sullivan City Council met in open session on Tuesday, November 5, where they approved three bid items, approved a liquor license and also received word of a planning and zoning hearing regarding a proposed micro brewery in the former MFA Coop Building, downtown.

The item piquing the most interest was that the Planning and Zoning Commission would hold a public hearing on Tuesday, November 12, at 6 p.m. regarding the proposed microbrewery, at 11 West Main, former MFA Coop, to be owned and operated by Mitchell Wideman and Drake Bequette. 

The duo needs a conditional use permit in order to operate such a facility in the downtown historic building.

Planning and Zoning was also scheduled to discuss vacating 265 feet of the northern portion of Elbert Street at the request of the City of Sullivan.

The council did approve a liquor license, under requests and petitions, from Ronald L. Young, DH IV, LLC, to sell liquor by the drink at 679 Fisher Drive, a former building occupied by Dr. Giem’s office. The council approved the request unanimously.

City Administrator J.T. Hardy presented his report to the council that consisted of three different bids matters seeking council approval.

Hardy reported that the Sullivan Park’s Department wished to request approval for the purchase of a Bobcat 5600 work machine in the amount of $56.742.12 using Sourcewell-NJPA contract. The council had budgeted $58,000 for the equipment and the council approved the purchase unanimously.

Hardy reported that three bids were submitted for the purchase of 2 new, 2020 Ford Police Interceptors, with the low qualifying bid coming from Hutcheson Ford, St. James, in the amount of $63.050 including a trade in amount of $12,000 for a 2012 and 2014 Dodge Charger Police vehicles. The second qualifying bid was from Laura Ford in the amount of $68,153.36 with a trade in of $7,000 for the two patrol vehicles.

A third bid was submitted by Behlman Automotive for 2020 Dodge Durango Pursuit vehicles in the amount of $61,248 that did not meet the Ford specifications.

The council approved the purchase of the patrol vehicles from Hutcheson Ford unanimously.

The final bid item submitted from Hardy was for the purchase of new color multifunction copier with staff recommending the council approve a Konica/Minolta C558 in the amount of $9,531 from Macro Technology. Jefferson City.

The council approved this bid unanimously after reviewing four similar bids.

Sullivan Alderman Tony Wessler was appointed to review the monthly bills for the month of November with Alderman Paul McCulloch to serve as alternate.

Under Alderman Input, Alderman Bobby Maupin praised the efforts of KTUI Radio, Sullivan Chamber of Commerce and Sullivan Independent News for the recent Roof Top Food Drive that raised $5850 and 2,720 food items for the Meramec Community Mission on Friday, November 1.

Alderman Paul McCulloch asked what the status of the Sullivan Golf Course financials were thus far into the year which staff stated would be available for the third quarter soon.

Mayor Dennis Watz, under Mayor Input, praised the work of Coldwell Banker/Reeves Realty for the downtown work they completed with the flower beds and roundabout. See related article in this week’s Sullivan Independent News.

The council has no matters for closed session and conclude their meeting for the first of November in 35 minutes.
