Man Charged With Child Abuse

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department arrested a Sullivan man who was observed on video at his place of work assaulting a juvenile relative.

Joshua Shelton, 32, faces one count of first-degree domestic assault. Shelton is being held on a $75,000 bond.

According to the probable cause statement, Shelton was seen grabbing the child and throwing him to the ground. He both struck and kicked the victim, picked him up and kneed him several times. Shelton delivered one final knee strike that knocked the victim back several feet.

The probable cause statement said deputies responded to the 1000 block of Highway D around 6 p.m. on March 19 for a report of a runaway juvenile.

Shelton and another party — C.S. — reported the juvenile left the house after an argument. A search was conducted and called off at approximately 2 a.m. March 20.

Around 5 a.m. that morning, deputies were alerted the juvenile was located at a friend’s house. He was transported to the Sullivan Police Department where deputies met with him.

The juvenile told deputies Shelton had assaulted him and left the residence. The victim showed where his lip was busted and said he was experiencing pain in his neck and throat.

Deputies went to Shelton’s employer and spoke to an operations manager who provided video from the warehouse. The probable cause statement said around 3:10 p.m. the assault took place.

Deputies made contact with Shelton, who signed a waiver of rights. Told there was video of the assault, Shelton said he “just lost his temper” and “lost control.”

Shelton also said he had not informed C.S. about the incident at the warehouse “because she would not be happy that he had done that.”
