Local Resident Reaches Goal In First Fundraiser For Skate Park

The Sullivan Independent News reported several weeks ago that Sullivan resident Steven Maune was working to bring upgrades and improvements to the Sullivan Skate Park in "Sunny" Jim Bottomley Park.

Maune contacted the Sullivan Independent News last week to report that the GOFUNDME account set up for the project reached its goal of $3,400.
“This was our first goal in working to bring a great skatepark to Sullivan for all the children and adults to enjoy that love skateboarding,” said Maune, who also happens to be a professional skateboarder. “We are now working on a non-profit status for our organization to allow us to seek out grant funding for the project."

Maune met with Sullivan City Administrator J.T. Hardy last Monday to report on the project and seek to address the Sullivan City Council.

Maune was also asked to speak by the city council on Tuesday night, August 18, during the regular meeting.

He informed the council of reaching the first goal, the organization of a new non-profit and future hopes for the skate park in the future.

Maune hopes to bring competitions to the city at some point once rehabilitations are complete on the skate park and possibly add a new park as well.

Juanita Zigler, Sullivan, who served as President of East Central College Student Government organization has been assisting Maune on the project providing assistance and knowledge.

“I saw how dedicated Steven was with this project and went to Sullivan High with him and wanted to help him,” said Zigler. “I think this project will continue to add to things for kids to do in our community and keep them away from things like drugs.”

Zigler looks to help Maune with the non-profit and assist in applying for grants and working to raise funds to improve the current park and possibly see a new park constructed in the future.

The group plans to continue working with the City of Sullivan on the project and Sullivan Independent News will provide updates as they become available.
