Home Deemed 'Dangerous Building' Will Be Demolished

The Sullivan City Council received one bid to demolish a home that has been declared a 'dangerous building', but the new owner has requested time to demolish the building themselves.

City Administrator JT Hardy reported May 15 that KR Wilson submitted a bid of $6,356 to demolish a home at 207 Woodrow Street. Hardy said the new owner would prefer to do the demolition.

Alderman Mark Dalton presented a motion to allow the new property owner until May 30 to demolish the home or the bid would be awarded and demolition done by KR Wilson. The motion was seconded by Alderman Tony Wessler and approved unanimously.

The council voted March 20 to declare the building 'dangerous.'  City Code Administrator Dan King presented the council with a history of violations at the property, owned by Clayton and Clayton Enterprises.

King stated that the home had damaged inside and outside. The property owners had the opportunity to repair, renovate or demolish it but have yet to do so. The city began issuing violations in 2011. Multiple letters were sent to Clayton and Clayton since October 2017.

No representatives from Clayton and Clayton showed up to the public hearing on the property in March.
