Franklin County Flu Numbers On The Rise In February

Influenza cases steadily rose throughout February, with the total going above 400 for the week ending February 23 and falling to 177 last week.

The Franklin County Health Department reports that 1,431 flu cases have been reported during the 2019-2020 season.

Until the week ending February 12, Franklin County’s flu cases remained in the double digits.

From there, the number of cases went from 112, to 161, to 287 and to 423 before finally coming down.

Type A remains the most popular strain, affecting 784 residents. There have been 646 reports of Type B.

Children ages 5 to 14 have been the most vulnerable, as they total 35.8 percent of all cases.

Adults ages 25 to 49 account for 21.7 percent.

Adults ages 50 to 64 have been 9.9 percent and children ages 2 to 4 have totaled 9.5 percent.

Teens and adults ages 15 to 24 have made up 8.5 percent. 

Children ages 0 to 2 and adults 65 and older each account for 7.3 percent.

Type B has afflicted children ages 5 to 14 more than any other age group. There have been 331 cases of Type B compared to Type A.

Type B has accounted for 72 of the 121 cases for ages 15 to 24.

State

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services reported that influenza activity is considered “widespread.”

During the week ending February 22, DHSS reported 8,230 cases statewide and the season-to-date total at 69,382.

There have been 40 flu-related deaths and 973 deaths involving pneumonia and influenza.

Missouri reported four influenza outbreak and six school closures as of Week 8.
