Franklin County Back To School Fair Another Success

The Franklin County Back To School Fair, held at First Christian Church, 150 Joel Street, Union, once again topped over helping 1,000 school children with many back to school needs aiding both children and parents as the new school year approaches.

Last year, the Sullivan Independent News reported that the event helped some 1,300 children in Franklin County with items such as backpacks, socks, notebooks, crayons, clothing, eye exams, glue, free haircuts, and all other items needed for back to school.

According to Theresa Woolf and Ann Benetin, the project once again has been a huge success with many donations, grants and volunteers helping the program continue to grow each year.

The Back to School Fair survives mainly on donations from businesses and organizations in the county along with an annual trivia night held in late February.

This year's event featured close to 2,000 backpacks along with all necessary supplies and a grant that allowed each student, whose family signed up for the event ahead of time, to receive a gift card for one new pair of shoes.

On Friday, the group served over 400 children who pre-registered and at press time Saturday, totals were not complete as families who pre-registered were still attending the event and those who did not pre-register were going to be welcomed in Saturday afternoon for receive assistance with items still remaining from the fair.

In conjunction with the event many vendors attended the fair offering items to families which include Ameren who provided light bulbs to families, Jefferson Franklin Community Action Corp which contributed socks and Laclede Gas who provided thumb drives to students.

The Back to School Fair assisted students of all ages from K-12 that included a free bag lunch through First Christian Church, who opened up their facility to host the two-day event.

The Annual event is open to all families in Franklin County and donations to the program can be made by sending your donations to the 501(c)3 Franklin County Back To School Fair, 150 Joel Avenue, Union, Mo. 63084.
