Fireworks Display Could Be July 2 Depending On Council Decision

The Sullivan City Council was scheduled to meet Tuesday evening, March 3, with one of the hot topics expected to be the fate of the Independence Day Fireworks Display date change to July 2.

According to Sullivan City Administrator J.T. Hardy, in a memo to Board of Alderman, there were no bids received for the City of Sullivan show for July 4, due to the increased demand for companies to provide shows on that day.

J&M Displays, which has provided the service for the City of Sullivan since 2014, informed the city they could not provide a display on July 4, due to increased bookings for that day but has offered to provide another date for the city and would also provide a credit to the city in the amount of $5,000 due to some inconveniences in the 2019 display.

Hardy reported that the council is expected to consider the date of Thursday, July 2, that would allow citizens to enjoy the Sullivan display on Thursday night and then begin their Independence Day holiday weekend.

The display is a joint expense effort of the City of Sullivan, First State Community Bank and other local businesses.

Under requests and petitions, the Sullivan Fire Protection District is looking to host its annual Firemen’s Picnic Parade on Thursday, April 30, at 5 p.m. which would kick-off the annual picnic in Sunny Jim Bottomley Parks Thursday through Saturday, April 30 through May 2. The district is asking for street closure on Thurmond Memorial Drive during the picnic.

The parade will also follow the normal downtown parade route beginning at City Hall then traveling onto Washington St., Hughes Ford, Main St., Clark St., East Springfield Rd. to North Park St. and conclude at Thurmond Memorial Drive.

Two proposed ordinances will be before the council Tuesday that include:

Ord. 3883, which would approve changing the floodplain management administrator designee from the Code Administrator/Building Commissioner to City Engineer;

Ord. 3884, would approve a 60-day contact with Don Maggi Inc. to mill and resurface the existing Sullivan Police Department’s parking area, add eight additional parking spaces and a concrete dumpster pad area in the amount of $48,413.15.

The council did have closed session posted for real estate, litigation and personnel.
