Family Escapes House Fire Just Before Firefighters Arrive

Working smoke detectors played a key role in a family of three escaping their burning home Thursday, September 14 at 316 Sappington Bridge Road, as firefighters arrived to extinguish the blaze.

The fire, which began in the living room area of the home, quickly spread. It trapped a woman and a child who were removed from a side winder by the father of the home.

According to Sullivan Fire Chief Eric Lewis, the fire was quickly spreading when firefighters arrived.

“We received the call at 8:30 a.m. Thursday morning and as I left House One and turned onto Main Street, I could see the heavy smoke coming from the area of the possible structure fire,” said Lewis. “When I arrived on the scene there was thick, heavy black smoke coming from the front porch of the home along with heavy flames.”
