Council Receives Medical Marijuana Zoning Recommendations

The Sullivan City Council on Tuesday, May 21, received recommendations for medical marijuana zoning that has been discussed by Planning and Zoning as well as city staff.

Alderman Tony Wessler, who also serves on the Planning and Zoning Board, presented the recommendations for zoning on these facilities.

The recommendations were: medical marijuana cultivation facilities be located within M-1 (industrial) zoning districts with a conditional use permit; medical marijuana dispensary facilities within the C-4 (general commercial) zoning district with a conditional use permit; medical marijuana-infused products manufacturing facilities within M-1 zoning districts with conditional use permit; medical marijuana testing facilities located within M-1 zoned districts with a conditional use permit and the 1,000-foot buffer from an existing elementary and secondary school child day-care center or a church.

City staff has recommended holding a public hearing based on the proposed zoning recommendations as well as distance measuring method to be formally adopted in writing and definitions be clarified.

Planning and Zoning has been reviewing the zoning requirements for several months with extensive review by city officials as well.

No date has been set at press time regarding the proposed public hearing on the zoning requirements for marijuana facilities and operations.
