Council Approves Three Ordinances, Recognizes John Rice, Hires Dawson For Position

The Sullivan City Council met in open session on Tuesday, March 19, where they presented a proclamation to KTUI’s John Rice, approved three ordinances, approved payment of the monthly bills totaling $1,282,408.41 and hired David Dawson to the position of Building Inspector.

Prior to the meeting, Mayor Dennis Watz read a proclamation honoring Rice’s retirement. Rice thanked the board and all previous boards for allowing him to work with them through the years and that they always had the city’s best interest at heart.

The council approved payment of the monthly bills in the amount of $1,282,408.41 unanimously after they were reviewed by Alderman T.J. Carey.

The council approved three ordinances Tuesday that included: 

Ord. 3834, which changed zoning at the former library building located at 104 West Vine from C-2 commercial business district to R-1 single family district, at the request of the owner, Sullivan School District. The Sullivan School District plans on converting the building into an educational facility. The change was also approved by the Planning and Zoning commission;

Ord. 3835, approved a 30-day contract with Flynn Drilling for work associated with the remediation of Well #10, which includes a down-well video and packer test in order to determine the proper course of action so that it can be retuned to a functioning water well for the city;

Ord. 3836, means the city shall, when it receives inquires from citizens, make reasonable efforts to notify low income individuals residing within the city who are not entitled to benefits under Title XVIII (18) of the Social Security Act, or are eligible for assistance under the State plan under that title regarding this arrangement with Missouri Baptist Sullivan Hospital. The City shall have no further obligations under this passage of this agreement.

Under Alderman Input, Alderman Ton Wessler, wanted to remind residents that spring cleanup will be held on the week of April 1-5. (Two bulk items are allowed per house. One appliance or white goods is allowed per house but old refrigerators, air conditioners, freezers, etc must have freon units removed by a certified technician. All boards or lumber cannot exceed four-feet in length. All items need to be bagged or boxed with a maximum weight of thirty pounds, a maximum of six bags and stacked neatly at the curb.

The council went into closed session to discuss one matter of personnel in which they approved the hiring of Dave Dawson to the position of building inspector at a rate of $17.92 per hour beginning April 10.

The council will hold their next meeting on Tuesday, April 2, at 7 p.m.
