Business Owners Address Council Tuesday Regarding Burglaries

“A lot of this is juvenile activity and it’s nothing like I’ve seen in my career in law enforcement. The juvenile system is broken and businesses and community members need to speak to their state legislators about funding the juvenile system.” - Sullivan Police Chief George (Randy) Counts

The downtown Sullivan business community and many others attended the Tuesday, Nov. 21, meeting of the Sullivan City Council expressing concerns, seeking assistance and advice as to what to do to curb a recent rash of burglaries that have included multiple strikes on some of the businesses. In all, some 22 burglaries had been recorded in Sullivan since Oct. 1.

Frick's Market co-owner Darren Newbanks spoke before the council under requests and petitions as one of the spokespersons for the business community regarding the recent burglary issues and vandalism.

Newbanks reported that his business has been targeted probably 24-30 times over the last three years by vandals and in the last couple of months the business has been hit in three separate burglaries.
