Sullivan 18U Team Scheduled To Begin Season June 2

Despite American Legion baseball getting canceled in 2020, a new league organized by Washington Post 218 has formed with three divisions and teams spanning eastern Missouri.

Sullivan will field an 18-and-under team in the AAA division this summer. 

They are scheduled to begin the season Tuesday, June 2 at Washington. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Sullivan will host Eureka on Wednesday, June 3 at 5 p.m. The team is awaiting a decision by the city of Sullivan on whether or not it will be able to use “Sunny” Jim Bottomley this summer. If not, the games will be moved to a difference location.

Doubleheaders are scheduled for Saturday, June 6 against Ballwin, Sunday, June 7 against Warrenton and Monday, June 8 against Hermann, all at home.

A tournament is scheduled at Washington from June 11-14.

Sullivan hosts Washington on Wednesday, June 17, St. Peters on Saturday, June 20 and Union on Sunday, June 21.

The games against St. Peters and Union will be doubleheaders.

Sullivan hosts New Haven on Wednesday, June 24, the Gamers on Saturday, June 27, Kirkwood on Sunday, June 28, Hermann on Wednesday, July 1 and and will be at Manchester for the season finale on Tuesday, July 14.

The team will be coached by Keith Beckett and Lane Wiese.

Josh Wiese.

Most of the players return from past Post 18 freshman, junior and senior legion teams.

Teams

There are 16 teams in the senior division and many are holdovers from the Ninth District, including:

Washington;

Union; 

New Haven;

Hannibal;

Warrenton;

Rhineland;

Elsberry; and

St. Peters.

Non-Ninth District teams include:

Alton, Ill;

Kirkwood;

Prospects;

Gamers;

Eureka;

Ballwin; and

Maryland Heights.

Social Distancing

There will be special rules in place to respect social distancing guidelines.

The umpire calling balls and strikes will stand behind the pitcher’s mound.

Players must be staggered in the dugout and coaches will be permitted to sit outside to make room their players.

How teams handle fans will likely be a local issue determined by the municipality or entity that owns the field.
