Twelve Crashes, Three Injuries Reported During Labor Day Enforcement
Troop I of the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported 12 crashes and three injuries during the Labor Day enforcement.
The counting period for the holiday weekend was 6 p.m. on August 31 to 11:59 p.m. on September 3.
Troopers made six driving while intoxicated arrests and 12 drug arrests. There were no boating-related injuries, fatalities or crashes.
On September 1, a Lebanon teen was airlifted to Mercy Hospital in Springfield after striking a tree, resulting in partial ejection. Stephen Speer, 19, was traveling in a 2004 Ford Ranger. The vehicle returned to the roadway, ran off the right side, struck a tree and fence line. Speer was partially ejected. He was not wearing a safety device.
Brendin W. Rumbaugh, 18, Lebanon, was a passenger and had moderate injuries. He also was not wearing a safety device.
On Sept. 3, a 2012 Hyundai Sonata driven by Brandon Newlin, 29, El Paso, Texas, was traveling on Birch Road near Phillipsburg. He failed to negotiate a curve, traveled off the left side of the road and struck a ditch. Newlin was taken to Mercy Hospital in Springfield to be treated for moderate injuries.
Newlin was arrested for driving while intoxicated and careless and imprudent driving.
