Protesters March For Equality Through Steelville

Dozens of demonstrators marched on Saturday through Steelville as a response to the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis May 25.

Floyd, 46, was killed when police officer Derek Chauvin held his knee on his neck for more than eight minutes while he was handcuffed and restrained face down on the street.

Chauvin has been charged with second-degree murder and three other officers have been charged with aiding and abetting murder.

Protests have sprung up across the United States and some have turned into full-blown riots as a response.

On Saturday in Steelville, the march went off smoothly with Crawford County Sheriff Darin Layman saying there were no issues between either side.

“It was extremely peaceful on both side,” said Layman, adding that there were good conversations with the demonstrators before and after.

Six extra deputies were called in to provide assistance along with Steelville police officers. Layman estimated there were about 15 to 20 law enforcement personnel.

“We took a very passive approach,” Layman said. In a press release June 5, the sheriff said their goal was not to become involved unless warranted nor give the appearance of interfering with “anyone’s First Amendment rights.”

Due to recent events around the country, Layman said their mission was to make every effort “to ensure the safety of life, property and the constitutional rights of everyone, whether you choose to participate in the event or not.”
