Financial Audit Of Crawford County Began This Week

A financial audit of Crawford County began this week and is expected to be turned into the State Auditor's Office by Aug. 15.

The audit is being conducted by Stopp & VonHoy CPA.

Crawford County Clerk John Martin already knows the county will be told to find more revenue and to watch its deficit spending.

While the county was able to balance the budget in 2017, it remains several hundred thousand dollars in debt to itself, largely because of the decision to change employees' health insurance to a self-funded system in 2012.

Crawford County avoided another year of deficits because of lean budgeting by officials and timeliness of the elections. Since there has only been one election in 2017, the county was able to cut that expense by three-quarters from 2016.
