Commission Rules Out Gazebo

An issue stretching back six months has finally been settled as the Crawford County commission voted Tuesday not to have another gazebo built on the courthouse lawn.

The commission rendered what is likely its final decision on the matter.

Commissioners set an April 1 deadline for the group trying to save the gazebo to present a plan.

The group was not present for the decision on Tuesday.

Two members — Kevin Green and Tami Cape — told commissioners on April 9 that the April 1 deadline was unfair.

Commissioners did not meet on April 1 and there was no meeting on April 2 due to the municipal elections.

However, the commission said nobody from the group contacted them before April 1.

“For the record,” said Presiding Commissioner Leo Sanders on Tuesday. “On November 27, 2018, at 10:15 a.m…the commission stated to Tami Cape that the deadline was April 1 and she said that she would pass the word.”

Sanders said April 1 “came and went” and commissioners never received a phone call or email from any group representative.

On April 9, Cape told Sanders that she had seen him in public and he never said anything to her. The presiding commissioner told Cape it wasn’t his responsibility.

“I saw Tami on two different occasions and nothing was said,” according to Sanders.

Sanders said “careful consideration” was taken and that he talked to people across the county whose response was not to put another gazebo up.

He motioned to nix another gazebo.

District 1 Commissioner Rob Cummings said he was leaning towards having it put back up, but the material was changed without notifying the commission.

District 2 Commissioner Jared Boast thumbed through his phone to see if he had any emails from the group that he might have missed.

“I haven’t received any contact from 5-Star Buildings or the coalition,” Boast said. “There is no form of update. I even double checked Facebook. I think we’ve done our due diligence. I’ll second Leo’s motion.”
