City Taxes May Run Through County

The resignation of Beverly Robb as Bourbon’s collector in June prompted city officials to reach out to county collector Pat Schwent and gauge her interest in performing the task.

Schwent reported to the county commission on June 25 that she had no issues and that it was up to them.

The county would charge 1 percent.

“This is the commission’s contract,” Schwent said.

County Assessor Kelli Vestal also would have to agree.

Schwent said in the past, the commission charged Sullivan and the village of Leasburg 5 percent, but it was too onerous to continue at that rate.

“It was hitting (Leasburg) hard,” she said.

The charge was eventually dropped to 1 percent for the collector’s office and 1.5 percent for the assessor’s office.

“There is no reason to deviate,” she said to commissioners.

The city estimated at its June 18 meeting that it would cost between $4,500 to $5,000 for collection.

Mayor Danny Skaggs said if it was that cheap, they “would be crazy not to” go through the county.

Skaggs confirmed that the board had looked into using the county for collection in the past, but that it was too expensive.
