Broken Windows At Police Department To Be Fixed

Bourbon city council members were in apparent agreement on improvements to the police station on June 18, with Mayor Danny Skaggs telling the board he would fix a cracked window.

The discussion began when Ward 2 Alderman Carl Hammack asked what the board needed to do to get it fixed. Hammack said he was walking by the building with someone the previous week who pointed out the crack.

“People see it when they walk the streets,” he said.

Hammack suggested calling a glass company to have it replaced, but Skaggs said he would be undertaking the project.

The mayor told the board he would be leaving the glass in, building a wall on the inside and framing it on the outside.

“I’m not going to try and take that glass out,” Skaggs said. He estimated that it would cost $1,000 to have it fixed. Hammack believed it would be around $600.

Ward 2 Alderwoman Mary Heywood said she thought the city had budgeted for windows.

Whatever the fix, Hammack said, something needed to be done. It led to an exchange with Skaggs.

“I can only do what I do,” the mayor said.

“We can always hire somebody if that’s what we need to do,” Hammack replied.

“You want to hire somebody, then hire them,” Skaggs said. “Do it and be done with it. Do what you want to do.”

“If it’s something you’re going to do…” Hammack said before Skaggs jumped in to say that he has been doing other projects at the police department.

“You are going to do it or you’re too busy?” Hammack asked. “I understand if you’re busy.”

Skaggs then asked Hammack if they had a problem.

“I don’t have a problem,” he said. “If you’re too busy, then you’re too busy.”

“It sounds like you have a problem,” Skaggs said. “I’ve been busting my butt working on that (building)”

“I asked a question,” Hammack said. “Your answer was ‘I don’t have time.’”

“I’ll do it,” Skaggs said.

The meeting adjourned shortly after.
