Bourbon Resident Says Drivers Speeding Through Neighborhood

"The kids get a ticket and the parents call me (complaining)" - Bourbon Police Chief Paul Satterfield on issuing tickets to teen drivers

A Bourbon resident told the city council Sept. 18 that drivers are speeding through her subdivision after school dismisses.

Carma Naquin said in the past, officers patrolled on Johnson Street, which helped the issue.

Mayor Danny Skaggs said he has had speeding drivers past his house, but doesn't know what the fix is. “I do not know how we can stop it,” he said, adding that stopping the drivers on Johnson Street will not stop speeding on Frontier Lane or Park Street.

Police Chief Paul Satterfield said when school lets out, officers tend to get more calls and they are dispatched everywhere. Satterfield suggested taking the license plate number and forwarding it to police for a follow-up.

Ward 1 Alderman Dave Lafferty said he has noticed the speeding problems being worse this year. Satterfield said they are still writing tickets, but parents are lashing out at the police.

“The kids get a ticket and the parents call me (complaining),” he said. “It is a different generation of parenting.”
