BBQ With Bourbon Pork Steak Competition

The first-ever “BBQ with Bourbon” pork steak competition, sponsored by the Bourbon Economic Development Group, will be held Oct. 7 on the grounds of the Bourbon Fire station.

There is a $20 entry fee and first place is $20 and a gift basket. Judges will be Mayor Danny Skaggs, a Bourbon police officer and a member of the Bourbon Fire Protection District.

Contact (573) 732-5900 to sign up.

Judging will be held at 4 p.m. Participants can begin setting up between 9-10 a.m.

Contestants must use bourbon whiskey in their preparation.

Chuck Ray of the BED said the pork steak competition is an effort to increase “community” in Bourbon.

“We want to bring groups and individuals together in a mutually desired setting: food, music and a relaxed environment,” he said. “We love the quaintness of our community and would like to share its resources with others, maybe even encourage them to join us in living here, starting a new business or expanding their operations here.”

Ray said the cook-off will be a trial as BED pursues a St. Louis BBQ Society sanctioned event in 2018.

“We should have a reputation for hosting a “fall season of food and fun,” he said, noting the Fall Festival, the Town & Country Bank Chili Cook-Off and a barbeque event.

“Together, we can invigorate our local economy to create jobs, retain young adults and expand our local resources.”
