Fire At Reptile Ranch Believed To Be Accidental

A fire that broke out Thursday morning at Riverside Reptile Ranch in Stanton is believed to be accidental, according to Sullivan Fire Chief Eric Lewis.

Lewis said two investigators from the Fire Marshal's Office ruled out all sources of ignition, except electrical.

The fire was contained to the cabin and storage building. The building where the reptiles are housed was spared. No exotic animals were hurt.

A male employee was transported to Missouri Baptist Hospital for minor burns.

"Crews did an incredible job of protecting the reptile building and other exposures and preventing the fire from spreading," Lewis said. Assistance from St. Clair, Bourbon and Cuba fire departments provided water and manpower. The Sullivan Fire Auxiliary provided sandwiches and sports drinks as crews stayed on scene for more than 5-1/2 hours. "We are very thankful for everyone's assistance," Lewis said.

Around 22 responders were on scene throughout the event.
