Sheriff’s Office Runs Sex Offender Compliance Check

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office found that two of 17 registered sex offenders were not in compliance with their addresses during a check on Halloween.

According to Sheriff Darin Layman, charges are being sought against the two offenders.

“As always, our goal at the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office is to maintain the safety of the children enjoying this holiday,” Layman said.

The sheriff’s office conducted a random check of addresses and Layman said that deputies were present at “trunk or treat” events to watch for registered offenders.

Per state statutes, registered offenders on Halloween must avoid all contact with children and remain inside his/her residence between the hours of 5 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. unless required to be elsewhere for just cause (includes, but is not limited to employment or medical emergencies.

Sex offenders must also post signs stating that “no candy or treats at this residence” and leave all outside residential lighting off during the evening hours.
