Relay For Life Raises $40,000

Roger Bridgeman, Sr., was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer 33 years ago and he’s still standing.

Bridgeman, the 2019 Crawford County Relay for Life Hero of Hope, was surrounded by family Friday night as he and other cancer survivors were recognized in their fight.

The annual event held at the Recklein Auditorium raised $40,000.

When Bridgeman was diagnosed in 1985, treatment was still new. It became “valuable in developing new and more effective ways” of fighting cancer.

Treatment has taken its toll on Bridgeman, but he has defied the odds. He was commended for his “faith and strength” in helping him overcome cancer and enjoy the many blessings in his life.

Some 70 cancer survivors were present Friday and like Bridgeman, all of them had battled the odds. Becky Doyle, one of the event co-chairs, allowed each survivor to announce what type of cancer they had and how long they had been fighting.

Doyle told them to keep up the fight and they would keep fighting for them.

Outside the Recklein, various businesses and organizations set up booths to provide activities. Later during the night, the luminaria ceremony was held to honor survivors and those who lost their battle.

Survivors were were treated to a pre-ceremony dinner sponsored by the Tri-C Club and catered by Barn & Grill.

Pastor Rick Haggett welcomed everyone and opened with a prayer. Pastor Rick Drew provided the final prayer to close.
