Fire Marshal: Feedback Positive On Fire Codes

Bourbon Fire Marshal Corey Rice said that he has received positive feedback on the fire codes required for new businesses or businesses making renovations.

The fire protection district’s board of directors passed the 2018 ICC Building and Fire Codes earlier this year, which establishes building, occupancy and firework permits for businesses within the district.

The codes were brought to light in April when Fire Chief Steve Kimker asked the city of Bourbon to pass the codes.

The city council has not taken action.

Rice told the Independent News in June that he had a good conversation with Mayor Dave Lafferty.

Rice assured Lafferty that only new businesses or new construction would be subject to the permits.

“I will not be going business to business,” Rice said.

Applicants can download the permit applications on the fire district website at bourbonfpd.com.

Businesses submitting a building permit must also submit a copy of any building plans.

Applicants will be responsible for contacting the fire marshal to inspect during construction, fire protection systems testing and final inspection.

After plan review and permit fees are paid, a permit will be issued.

The permit is $25.

Knox Box

The fire district is requiring all new construction or buildings being remodeled with a fire alarm or sprinkler system to purchase a knox box.

The knox box must be mounted to the right of the front door.
