District Holds Informational Meeting On Four-Day Week

The Crawford County R-1 School District held an informational meeting Tuesday on moving to a four-day school week for 2021-22.

Bourbon has been releasing information on its Facebook page to highlight the changes that a four-day week would create.

The calendar being proposed starts the school year on Tuesday, Aug. 24 and students would be off all but one Monday.

One Monday per month would be used for teacher professional development.

Students would receive two weeks off for the December holidays, but no spring break.

High school classes are tentatively scheduled to start at 7:45 a.m. and run until 3:35 p.m.

Elementary and middle school classes are tentatively scheduled to start at 7:53 a.m. and run until 3:43 p.m.

All snow days would be built into the calendar.

In surveys, the district has found 74.2% support for a four-day week.

Around 68% of families said they believed a four-day week would “positively impact” their families.

The district said in an informational guide released to Facebook that the possible benefits would be a more consistent yearly schedule, higher teacher retention, improved attendance, increased instructional time, time for extra cleaning and more quality time for families.

The longer instructional block would be more conducive to project based and lab classes.

The district said there are no significant cost savings to be had; however, the district will save on transportation miles, reduce wear on buses and use less utilities.

Of the 61 districts in Missouri that have implemented a four-day week, Bourbon said those schools have seen improved morale among students and staff.

Attendance rates have also increased.

Bourbon tabled a decision to move to a four-day week for the 2020-21 school year due to COVID-19.
