Young Guns And Seasoned Veterans Fire Up Girls’ Soccer Squad

As the Lady Eagles prepare to open their season at the Warrenton Classic on Friday, Mar. 15, Sullivan head coach Matt Wiegers is excited to see how “having so many young guns in the mix” will fuel an already fired-up group. Their season opener will be against St. Clair at 5 p.m. that Friday. Then, the following day, they will play St. Louis Christian at 11 a.m. and Elsberry at 3 p.m.

After Warrenton, the Lady Eagles will soar over to Lutheran St. Charles for another tournament. They will first face off against University City at 6:15 p.m. on Monday, Mar. 18, and then play Northwest at the same time the following day. Their third match will be on Mar. 20, but the time and opponent will still be determined. Sullivan’s final game in the tournament will be against Lutheran High at 4:30 p.m. the day after.

One of the seniors, Cambria Pohlman, whom Wiegers called an “offensive stud,” will make her final return to the field after dominating the stat board in 2023. She led Sullivan with 78 shots, 53 points, 20 goals and 13 assists.

2024 graduate Maria Schatzl will be the starting goalie again in her swan song for the Eagles. Wiegers described her as “a very strong goalkeeper and net for us, and she really pushes the play up. So, we’re very confident that the ball will be moving up out of the back, and we’re going to be strong on our back four.”

The other returning seniors are Hayli Venable, Abigail Smith, Alyssa Johnson and the recovering Zehn Porter.

Wiegers also said that the juniors and sophomores have been “stepping up” on the field in the last couple of weeks. He mentioned junior Jada Adams and said she “really helps push the ball and move the ball” down the field. Wiegers is looking forward to seeing her have the opportunity to play an entire season.

The other 2025 graduates on the varsity team are Molly Lohden, Addison Wagner, Dorie Richardson, Alaina Wall, Gabi Camacho and Karen Dietzler.

Then there are five sophomores: Avery Merkel, Kara Schmidt, Tessa Newman, Avaleigh Parks and Scarlett Hulsey.

Wiegers described the freshman class as “really strong” this year. The two who will see varsity action are Ella Kirk and Ava Hayes.
