Volleyball Takes Down Herky, Owensville

The Sullivan Lady Eagles had two games early this week.

Monday was the Serving Up A Cure game that saw Sullivan sweep Herculaneum. The Lady Eagles traveled to Owensville the next night, and swept the Dutchgirls.

On Thursday night, Sullivan battled Union at home and came up short in five sets.

Herculaneum

The energy was up on Monday night. Sullivan hosted their annual Serving Up A Cure game. Sullivan's own Emma Brune is a childhood cancer survivor and has vision in only one eye from suffering from unilateral retinoblastoma.

Sullivan raised $2,000 to donate to Emma's Army and the American Cancer Society. The Lady Eagles swept Herculaneum in all three sets, 25-10, 25-9, and 25-12.

Brune continues to lead the team in kills game after game and Monday night was no different. Brune added 17 kills and four points in the game.

Sullivan also had another player have a big night.

Maci Nolie broke the school record in assists. She had 2,000 assists and continued her stellar career later that night.

Nolie secured 28 more assists in the game. She also had three kills, four aces, and ten points.

Senior Olivia Witt followed Brune in kills with seven. She also secured seven points.Sophmore Stevi Saling secured four kills.

Senior Ali Blue landed three kills and one assist. Freshman Ava Blankenship got two kills.

Senior Erica Juergens finished with one kill. Senior Carley Godfrey tallied one assist.

Junior Emily Clonts claimed three aces and eight points.

Sophomore Shelby Giebler locked in three aces and five points.

Junior Aleah Hunter finished with one ace and four points.

Senior Anna Brooks tallied three kills and one assist.

Owensville

Sullivan continued with the same motivation the next night. The Lady Eagles traveled to Owensville to sweep the Dutchgirls.

Sullivan trounced Owensville in all three sets, 25-15, 25-10, and 25-13. Owensville scored more points then Herculaneum the night before but the outcome was the same, resulting in another Lady Eagles victory.

Witt led in kills with 11. She also tallied nine points. Blankenship followed in kills with 10 and had two assists.

Brune got nine kills, five aces, and seven points.

Juergens landed four kills. Blue and Saling each had one kill. Clonts had an ace and seven points. Brooks tallied three assists and two points. Godfrey got one ace and three points.

Nolie notched another 29 assists in the game. She also finished with one kill, five aces and 20 points.

Union

The always tough Lady Wildcats came to Sullivan on Thursday. The Lady Eagles faced Union twice last season and went into an extra set both times. Both games were in Union last season, with Sullivan being victorious the first time.

Thursday was no different with that game going in an extra set, but with Union coming out on top.

Union won the first, fourth, and extra set, 25-22, 25-20, and 15-9. Sullivan was victorious in the second and third sets, 25-18 and 25-21.

The game started on a positive note when Sullivan scored the first point. Union answered back and took the lead but Sullivan snapped back with a point. Sullivan broke the tie, but the Lady Wildcats refused to go down.  Union added three more unanswered points when Sullivan made a rally back.

Head Coach Sarah Rochleau called a timeout when Sullivan was down, 11-5. The Lady Eagles bounced back with a score. The Lady Eagles started another rally and brought the crowd back. Brune rammed a spike and a kill and the score was 17-12 in Union’s favor. Sullivan’s resilience shined and the crowd went wild when Sullivan was down by one, 17-16. Coach Rochleau took a timeout to talk to her team after Union added three more points, 20-16. The Lady Eagles made Union nervous when they bridged the gap to, 21-19, and Union’s Head Coach Khloe Getman took a time out.

The Lady Eagles were just barely short in the set, 25-22. The seldom defeat continued in the night with Sullivan falling in the extra set.

The positive of playing the extra set, the ladies add extraordinary stats. Brune led in kills with 21. She also had one assist and three points. Witt followed in kills again with 11. She also made an ace and 11 points. Saling secured six kills. Blankenship blasted three kills and an assist.

Brooks made three aces, nine points, and four assists.. Raegan Johnson landed two kills, one ace, and ten points. Clonts claimed one ace and eight points.

Nolie led in assists with 38. She also finished with five aces and nine points.

Up next: Sullivan will be on the road in the first two days of the week, then finish out at home against St. James.
