Track And Field Crosses The Finish Line At State

Sullivan finished their season with a bang at the Class 4 State Tournament, held at Adkins Stadium from May 24-25. The seven state qualifiers, as well as backups Daveah McClain and Jade Studdard, traveled to Jefferson City this past weekend. Mariah Denney and Robert York came home with all-state honors.

After winning both districts and sectionals, York took the runner-up spot in the state javelin contest. He used his rocket of an arm  to throw a school record 57.67 meters, and secure second. He improved upon his ninth-place finish from the previous year when he first went to state.

M. Denney clinched the state podium in two events last Friday. The freshman secured her first medal at 8th place in the 1600-meter run and raced to a speedy time of 5:15.59. Later in the day, she capped off her rookie year with a seventh-place finish of 2:18.87 in the 800-meter run, setting a new school record.

Her brother Abram Denney placed 14th in the first round of the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:36.94.

The 4x400-meter relay team took 14th in the opening round. M. Denney, Eva Heady, Breanna Mayberry and Karlee Head recorded a time of 4:11.18.

Heady landed 14th in the first round of the triple jump at a distance of 9.92 meters on Friday.

Wyatt Kraus finished off an accomplished high school career with a third state appearance and a ninth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles. He ran for 15.21 seconds in the opening round. Kraus is grateful for his unforgettable experiences while on the track and field team. He stated, “I’ll definitely miss getting to spend time with incredible people, meeting athletes from all over and running relays with my friends. Above all though, I’ll miss getting to make memories with my teammates. Track has been such an incredible thing to be a part of, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the experience.”
