Sullivan Wins Consolation At Bank-It Tourney

The Eagles clawed their way through the Ninth Annual FCNB Bank-It tournament. Sullivan fell in their first game against Potosi but bounced back in their next games. Sullivan finished out the tournament with a win over Cuba on Friday, 37-35.

In the first quarter, the Wildcats stormed out of the gate and scored the first layup right away. Gavin Dace scooped up the rebound, but Cuba’s Joel Sanders netted a free throw. Sam Summers scored the first four points for Sullivan. Summers also tied the game. Cuba’s Hunter Smith then broke the tie with a three point basket. Head Coach Dino McKinney took a timeout to talk to his team when they were down by five. Drake Gawer then netted two three-point baskets back to back to give Sullivan the lead.

In the second quarter, Sullivan added to their lead. Gabe Dace swished a three pointer and Summers posted another layup. The glass took a beating when Gavin Dace lobbed a layup off it, and Drake Gawer sailed a three point basket off it. Cuba bridged the gap to four with a three point shot by Dylan Beal, 21-17.

In the third quarter, Cuba would try to take the lead, but Sullivan wouldn’t let go. Beal dropped in another layup and Gavin Dace scored two more layups. Summers sailed a free throw and followed with a layup. Coach McKinney took a timeout with a comfortable lead. Beal lobbed a layup in under a minute left and Sullivan still led, 29-23.

In the final quarter, Cuba battled, but Sullivan sealed the win. The Eagles had great ball control during the whole game, and that really played out beautifully in the fourth. Aiden Kirk added a three pointer and Cuba’s Sanders sent a layup through the hoop. The Eagles were trying to run out the clock, but Cuba fouled to keep that from happening. Summers sent in another free throw, but Sanders kept fighting for Cuba. Coach McKinney took a time out when Sanders made the score, 34-29. Cuba’s Parker Stewart brought Cuba down by four before their head coach, DJ Dace, took a time out. Sanders scored the last basket of the game after Kirk sailed two more free throws for Sullivan.

Sullivan forced Cuba to have twelve turnovers with Gabe and Gavin Dace having the most for the team with four each. Summers and Glaser each finished with two turnovers. The Eagles had 26 rebounds and Gavin Dace had the most with eight. Gabe Dace followed with seven and Summers had five. Kirk tallied four and Gawer and Cambrian Koch each had one.

Summers scored the most points with twelve. Gavin Dace followed with seven. Gawer scored six and Kirk had five. Gabe Dace netted four and Glaser finished with three.
