Sullivan Takes Early Lead And Defeats Cavaliers

The Eagles played basketball at home on Monday and came away with a big win. The Bishop DuBourg Cavaliers came to town motivated from their first win of the season. Sullivan took the lead early and didn’t look back. The Cavaliers tried to fight back in the last quarter, but couldn’t close out the win. Sullivan defeated DuBourg, 49-40.

In the first quarter, Sullivan collapsed the Cavaliers early. Aiden Kirk made the score 12-5 when he connected on two free throws. Gavin Dace notched a lay up and DuBourg’s Head Coach Darian Head took a timeout to speak with the team with less three and a half minutes left. DuBourg’s Keenan Thomas landed a layup when the action resumed. Chris Glaser answered back with a three point basket. DuBourg’s Jack Master made the score 17-10 to end the quarter.

In the second quarter, DuBourg outscored Sullivan, but the Eagles held the lead. DuBourg’s David Sides connected with a layup and Thomas did the same. Sullivan’s Head Coach Dino McKinney took a time out with a little over six minutes left. Both teams were playing aggressively and Sam Summers notched another basket. Thomas answered back with a layup of his own. Gabe Dace delivered on a big three with three and half minutes left. DuBourg didn’t answer back for another two minutes. The teamwork was reflected when Kirk would shoot a ball and Gavin Dace would rebound the rock. He would shoot and Summers would pick up the rebound and draw the foul. The first half finished with a score of 23-18 when Summers landed a free throw.

In the third quarter, Sullivan kept control of the game. Thomas landed on another layup and Kirk answered back with a layup of his own. Summers laid one off the glass. Kirk drained a three point basket with a little over four minutes left. Thomas answered back with a three point basket. Summers scored another layup and drew the foul perfectly. Gavin Dace landed another lay up with a little over three minutes left. Kirk recorded a big layup for Sullivan before Thomas answered back with one of his own. Coach Head took a timeout with a little less than a minute and a half left. The Cavaliers finished the quarter with two free throws, 36-28.

In the final quarter, Thomas tried to bridge the gap, but DuBourg couldn’t connect with the win. Gavin Dace started the quarter with a free throw and Summers sailed in a layup. Summer added another two points with a little over five minutes left. DuBourg’s Brendan Crowe landed a huge three point basket and Gavin Dace connected with another free throw. Thomas tallied another two free throws then stole the ball back and landed another layup. Thomas kept up the pressure and added another two free throws. Gavin Dace tallied another two free throws and Coach McKinney took a timeout with a little under three left to play. Kirk connected on another two free throws and Thomas netted a jumping layup. Coach McKinney took a timeout after Summers scored another free throw. Thomas stole the ball again for DuBourg and landed the last layup for DuBourg. Glaser and Kirk each scored another free throw to make the final score 49-40.

Kirk led the team in points with 18 and was followed by Summers with 14. Gavin Dace tallied ten and was followed by Glaser with four. Gabe Dace finished with three.

The Eagles defense shined and recorded sixteen turnovers. Sullivan tallied seven steals. Kirk, Gavin and Gabe Dace all had two. Drake Gawer got one. The team made 24 rebounds. Kirk led with seven. Summers and Gabe Dace each had six. Gavin Dace had four and Gawer had one.
