Sullivan Baseball Slays Shamrocks, Tigers

The Eagles have been dominating their opponents this season. Sullivan gained some early week momentum on Monday and Tuesday. The Eagles recognized the youth leagues on Monday and acknowledged their seniors on Tuesday. The added good spirits are just what they needed to pick up the two wins. Sullivan shut out the New Haven Shamrocks, 12-0. The Eagles collapsed Salem the next day, 3-2.

New Haven

The three Eagle pitchers helped shut out the Shamrocks on Monday. They picked up eleven strikeouts on the mound. The runs were not in short supply either as the boys collected five hits and zero errors. Sullivan slayed the Shamrocks, 12-0.

In the first inning, Sullivan drew first blood early when they brought in six runs. Cambrian Koch smacked a fly ball to center to land on second. Gavin Schmidt and Chase Blue both drew walks to load the bases. Koch scored on a passed ball and the runners advanced. The bases were loaded again when Drake Gawer was struck by a pitch. Schmidt scored on an error made by the third baseman, Blue then scored on a wild pitch. Lucas Parsons and Dayton Skaggs were both walked and Gawer scored when Seth Valley grounded out to the first baseman. After another out, Jordan Rice hit a line drive single to center and scored Parsons and Skaggs.

In the second inning, the Eagles added four more unanswered runs. Schmidt walked, then stole second. He advanced to third before Chase Blue ground out to the third baseman. Gawer walked before Schmidt scored on a passed ball. Lane Blankenship came in as a courtesy runner for Gawer and stole second. He then advanced to third on a defensive indifference and scored on a passed ball. Parsons walked and Kaleb Keen came in as a courtesy runner for him. Keen advanced to second on a passed ball and third on a wild pitch. He scored on another passed ball before Skaggs was walked. Skaggs then stole second and advanced to third on a defensive indifference. Seth Valley followed with a walk. Skaggs scored when Nolan Ulrich grounded out to the shortstop.

At the bottom of the fourth, the boys secured the win with two more runs. Blankenship hit a fly ball double to center. Skaggs then slammed a fly ball to center field and then scored on an error by center field. He also scored Blankenship.

Schmidt was the winning pitcher and he gave up New Haven’s only hit of the game. He also picked up four strikeouts. Nate McReynolds pitched in relief and grabbed four more strikeouts and Skaggs tallied four as well.

Salem

Blankenship and the rest of the Eagles continued the momentum the next day and defeated the Tigers at home. Salem collected six hits on the day, but it was enough for the motivated Sullivan baseball team. Sullivan surged past Salem by one, 3-2.

In the first inning, Sullivan drew first blood right away. After an out, Schmidt hit a fly ball single to left. Schmidt then stole second and Blue hit a fly ball single to left. Schmidt scored on the throw.

In the third inning, the Eagles added another score. Blue started another two out rally when he landed on second on a fly ball to left. Skaggs singled on a pop fly and scored Blue.

In the fourth inning, Sullivan scored one last time. Ulrich hit a line drive single to center and Blankenship reached on an error. Ulrich was scored when Keen hit a successful sacrifice fly to left field. The Tigers scored two runs at their last at bat, but it wasn’t enough to secure the victory.

Blankenship gave up only five hits and two runs. He struckout Salem four times. He lasted five innings and Koch and Gawer pitched in relief. Gawer gave up one hit and recorded one strikeout. Koch tallied two strikeouts.
