Sullivan Baseball Loses Sight Of Dutchmen On Senior Night

The Eagles lost grip of their lead to Owensville’s late rally on May 1. Sullivan surrendered two runs in the top of the seventh, allowing the Dutchmen to clutch a 4-3 win.

The two Class 4 District 4 teams most recently met in last year’s championship. The Eagles walked off to win the title on Drake Gawer’s RBI, upsetting the Dutchmen 3-2.

Owensville came into Sullivan last Thursday with a vengeance. Dutchman Chase Weirich set the tone with a homer during the second inning.

After Owensville’s dinger, the Eagles responded with three runs to steal the lead. Mitchell Garner came in swinging with a triple, and Nate McReynolds drove him home on an RBI double. Seth Valley then belted a grounder, allowing McReynolds to cross the dish. Landen Doza followed by lining the ball to left field, and Valley put the Eagles on top 3-1.

Despite Sullivan’s rally to the front, the Dutchmen stayed hanging on their heels. Owensville inched closer with a run in the top of the sixth. Then, in the seventh, the Dutchmen cashed in a single for two go-ahead scores.

Sullivan struggled to push the game into extra innings and fell short at the doorstep, 4-3.

Drake Gawer started for the Eagles on the mound. He hurled 10 strikeouts while allowing five hits, three earned runs and a walk.

McReynolds came out of the bullpen during the seventh inning. He struck out two batters and gave up a hit.

Doza led Sullivan with two hits at-bat while recording an RBI.

McReynolds picked up a run, an RBI, a hit and a walk.

Valley tallied a run, an RBI and a hit.

Garner grabbed a run and a hit.

Chase Blue collected a hit and a walk.

Gawer landed a hit while Nolan Ulrich took a walk.
