Sullivan’s Resilient Defense Limits St. Francis Borgia To Three Goals

Sullivan boys’ soccer limited Class 1 state champion St. Francis Borgia to three goals. The Eagles didn’t score, but they executed a strong defensive effort against the Knights.

Regarding their performance, head coach Brian Immekus stated, “After falling behind by two goals early, I really liked how we adjusted defensively and defended as a team. To hold the Knights to 1 goal over the final 70 minutes took a team effort and showed what we’re capable of when we apply that team concept to defending.”

Just ten minutes into the match, Borgia quickly scored with two goals, so the Eagles put their full energy towards securing the net for the rest of the first half.

During halftime, Immekus told the team to start protecting the corners of the field more to tighten their grip on Borgia.

Sullivan’s resilient defensive performance continued in the second half as they saw only one goal from Borgia.

The Eagles came into the fight knowing that they were the underdogs and despite not scoring, they stayed strong against the Knights.

Immekus is hoping to see his team improve in taking possession of the ball, explaining, “We didn’t register a shot and goal, which makes it pretty difficult to win. We have to find a way to generate more offense versus top teams and get better at transitioning from defense to offense quickly when opportunities present themselves.”

Sullivan goalkeeper Alex Toews made a total of 10 saves.

Other stats were not available at press time.
