St. Clair Edges Out SHS Volleyball, 3-1

In their last regular season game, the #2 seed Sullivan (9-17) fell to the #1 seed St. Clair (21-9-1) on home territory.

The Lady Eagles won the first set 25-19 but suffered losses of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-21 in the remaining three sets.

It was also a highly emotional night as the team celebrated their graduating seniors: Aleah Hunter, Delaney George, Emily Clonts and Raegan Johnson beforehand and the Pep Club was in full force.

“Senior night is always a little bittersweet for our seniors as well as the rest of the team,” head coach Sarah Rochleau said about the evening. “I was proud of how our team played, despite the loss.  The atmosphere in the gym was amazing.  Our crowd really helped us out and made it a night to remember for the whole team.”

The turnout was great, with the Eagles’ Pep Club making the court shake, chanting and singing songs to cheer for their team.

On the other side, many St. Clair fans wore their “Beat Sullivan” shirts from the football game between the same two teams.

The Lady Eagles, energized by the Pep Club, confidently defeated Washington 25-19 in the first set, thanks to Johnson’s game-winning kill.

St. Clair picked themselves up in the 2nd and 3rd sets, beating the Lady Eagles

25-18 and 25-21.

In a suspenseful final match, the Lady Eagles repeatedly tied the Bulldogs until St. Clair took control at 21-21, making four consecutive points to win.

Ava Blankenship led the team with 45 attacks and 22 kills.

Allie Brune had a team-high of 4 aces and Clonts had 3. Shelby Giebler, Johnson and Ava Todd each picked up 1.

Clonts had the most points with 10.

Saling racked up 4 blocks, the highest on her team.

Ava Todd led with the most assists, recording 23.

Upcoming Events

Sullivan had secured the #2 seed in the district semifinals and will compete in the semifinals on Thursday, Oct. 19, at 6:30 p.m. at Owensville High School. The district championship will be held the following Tuesday.

For districts, Rochleau stated that her team “will be working all week to prepare for districts. If we end up facing Owensville we will be expecting a tough game.  We went 5 sets with them a few weeks ago and they always bring a good crowd at their home games.”
