Softball Gives Youth A Night To Remember
Before the Lady Eagles (8-7) took the field, head coach Ashley Crump told them to treat Owensville (2-7) like it was a “championship game.” Her final message to the girls was to “stay locked in” against their conference opponent, and so they did.
Sullivan showed no mercy to the Dutchgirls, crushing them 15-4 at home on Thursday, Sept. 19.
The Lady Eagles are undefeated in conference play (3-0), with their first two wins being against Pacific and Hermann. Crump says their “goal is to be steady, both defensively and at the plate” when playing Four Rivers opponents.
As it was also Youth Night, the high school softball team gave the Lady Eaglets five innings to remember. Once the varsity game finished, the youth players got their chance to run the bases.
Owensville struck first with a score on their opening drive.
Molly Lohden led off Sullivan with a triple and punched in a score on Ava Declue’s sacrifice fly ball. Dorie Richardson followed up by smoking the ball over the fence. Evelynn Harris blasted Sullivan’s second homer of the inning and the first of her career. She lifted Evvie Blankenship off the diamond to steal a 4-1 lead.
Sullivan cushioned themselves with seven more scores in their following drive.
The Lady Eagles threw the knockout punch to Owensville in the bottom of the fourth. Lohden battled McKynlee Peterson in for a score, and Declue sent Madison Ortner and Lohden home for scores. Blankenship swung the final strike, allowing Declue to seal the victory with the game-winning run.
A. Crump said her favorite moment from week four was seeing Harris have great outings at the plate. She was very proud of the junior for leading “the team in extra-base hits and RBIs.”
