With New Coach Aboard, Sullivan Eagles Look To Regroup In 2022

Coming off a 6-15 season, Sullivan’s baseball team is looking for a turnaround in 2022.

Head coach Jason Harbour left the dugout after six seasons and is succeeded by Ian Whitson.

Whitson comes over from Woodland R-4 in southeastern Missouri. He is a Steelville High School graduate and later moved on to play at Lindenwood University.

The new head coach said practices are off to a good start.

"Practice has been going well," said Whitson. "The boys have had some great energy and are always looking to improve. We've had almost every day on the field."

Sullivan hosted a baseball Jamboree and were successful in both of their games.

They defeated Vienna 11-1 and Bourbon 4-2.

"There are definitely things we need to continue to work on and improve upon but it was a great first step and experience for us as a coaching staff and a team." Whitson said about the Jamboree.

Sullivan is looking for their positive attitudes and youthful energy to help them to improve this season.

"The boys bring it every day and we stress never taking a day off and staying hungry," Whitson continued. "This group definitely wants to prove that we can compete with anyone on any given day. We have wealth of young pitching, which is always helpful. Our youth overall is definitely a positive, not only now but moving forward in years to come."

Sullivan opens their season on Friday against the Pacific Indians as part of the Four Rivers Conference Tournament. After that, they will play at home against Potosi.

Heading into the season opener, Whitson said it’s about focusing on “the little things” and staying sharp mentally.

“We need to keep it simple as much as possible and take care of the mental mistakes that we find ourselves dealing with in practice and in games,” he said.

Sullivan had six seniors graduate last year with a young roster that will be looking to fill their shoes. Whitson expects the Eagles to show up every game.

"I expect us to compete. Always compete." Whitson said. "Regardless of the score or outcome, I want our guys to always stay in the game. We have the potential to be a very scrappy team. I'm excited to continue to watch these boys improve and grow as ballplayers and young men."
