JV Boys Bring The Boom To Brentwood
The junior varsity boys battled in two divisions at the Brentwood Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 21. The varsity Eagles landed tenth out of fourteen squads, with 125 points, while the JV team went unranked.
Sullivan had three silver medalists: Blake Watson, Brayden Kisner and Xander Loyd.
Carsen Dudley won consolation, Benjamin Cornejo placed sixth, William Turner took seventh, while Jett Thomas and Cole Reed finished tenth.
Varsity Division
Watson (138) finished second, going 3-1 and scoring 25 at Brentwood. He first beat Caleb Klipfel (Notre Dame) in a 2:50 pin, Nicolis Phillips (STEAM Academy) in a 20-4 technical fall and Bao Mai (Affton) in a 2:39 takedown. The freshman’s only loss came in the first-place match, where he fell in 1:22 to Conner Clanton (Valle Catholic).
Kisner (132) was also the runner-up in his class, tallying 18 points from three victories. He bounced back to win his final three matches after losing a 13-6 decision to Joseph Beitel (Wright City). The junior brought down Ethan Wolk (Valle Catholic) in 1:22 and Andrew Montalbano (Affton) in 3:11, then secured his final victory by medical forfeit.
Dudley (126) won his consolation bracket, placing fifth and scoring 32.5. He first won a 7-3 decision over Harrison Newcombe (Bishop DuBourg), then lost an 8-2 ruling to Daishaun Wilbourn (Maplewood-Richmond Hts.). Dudley redeemed himself with three consecutive victories to close the day with. The junior locked up Neven Dinwiddie (STEAM Academy) at 1:20, Rylan Averbeck (Affton) at 1:21 and Juan Garrido (Ritenour) at 5:33.
Cornejo (190) racked up 30 points for Sullivan in his sixth-place finish. He snatched three wins, securing William Clarkson (St. Francis Borgia) in 5:37, Jesef Martin (Notre Dame) in 1:23 and Chase Reed (Valle Catholic) in 1:43. His two losses came against Cutter Abt (Valle Catholic) and Johnnie Staus (Lexington).
Thomas (175) took tenth in his division with 19 points and two victories. He trapped John Paul Barinque (Notre Dame JV) in 5:05 and Ethan Eslinger (Brentwood) in 3:56. The junior lost to Wyatt Baker (Hancock) in a 7-5 decision and Everett Jacquin-Lindsey (St. Francis Borgia JV) in a 1:18 fall.
Reed (215) fought his challengers tooth and nail. Despite going winless, he gave it his all for a tenth-place finish.
